Frequently Asked Questions about the Jericho Plan

What is the Jericho Plan?

The Jericho Plan is a student loan program available to the freshmen (class of 2012) for their freshman and sophomore years. A student who completes his four-year degree program will have the principal of the loan repaid through a scholarship fund during his junior and senior year of college. The Jericho Plan allows freshmen and sophomore students to attend college and will not be required to work a secular job during the school year. This frees up the student to enjoy and learn from the multitude of wonderful experiences of attending Hyles-Anderson College.

Why is it called the Jericho Plan?

Jericho was the first great opportunity to serve God and demonstrate His power to a new generation. Jericho was the first great victory for the Hebrew people when they entered the Promised Land. Those who entered were a new generation. The older generation had all died and the new generation would conquer the Promised Land. The freshman class that enters Hyles-Anderson College this year is the class of 2012. It is a new generation and 2008 is their Jericho–their first great victory.

Do I have to give up my freedom to be part of the plan?

No. The Jericho Plan is designed to give you freedom. Rushing off to work, driving an hour to work, working eight to ten hours a day, and driving home late at night is giving up your freedom. Participating in the clubs or athletics, going to the library, and attending social activities is not giving up your freedom.

What are the benefits?

  • Nearly every starting freshman will graduate from college in 2012.
  • Students will get a good night’s sleep.
  • Students will have time to study.
  • Students will have time to learn how to socialize in a nonthreatening environment.
  • Students will have time to learn to walk with God.
  • Students will learn servant leadership.

May I work a secular job if I want?

No. The goal of the Jericho Plan is to allow you the opportunity to attend Hyles-Anderson College and not work. This arrangement will allow you to commit your entire energy and effort to the development of your mental, physical, and spiritual growth while at Hyles-Anderson College.

How will I take care of incidental expenses?

If you do not have financial support from home or church, your summer employment is going to be very important to you. You must earn enough money to pay the $1200 registration fee, and money for incidentals. If you earn $9.10 an hour, and work 40 hours a week for 12 weeks, you will earn approximately $4,400 this summer. If you have $1000 deducted for taxes, and pay $440 in tithe, you will have $2,960 left. Pay $1200 registration, and that will leave you $1760. The $1,760 will give you $48.88 per week for incidental expenses.

What if I own a car and have auto payments, insurance, oil, gasoline, repair bills, etc?

A car is a very expensive proposition. It is probably best that you sell your car. You will not need it, and it would be “penny-wise and pound-foolish” to work a secular job just to have a car. A car is a nice thing to have, but it does not even compare to the benefits of being in the Jericho Plan. The Jericho Plan is not for everybody. It is for those who are serious about graduating and serving God. You can enjoy the benefits of a car payment later in life.

How much does the Jericho Plan cost?

Initial registration is $1200 per year.

During the junior and senior year of college the student must pay a $225 scholarship service fee for each of his four semesters as a freshman and sophomore. The total of $900 may be paid over a 2 year period before graduation. (This is about $37.50 per month over 24 months.)

Total cash outlay for the two years of the Jericho Plan is $3300. This amount also includes fees and textbooks.

How much does a year of school cost if I do not enter the Jericho Plan?

Total cost for tuition, room, and board is $7,280. This does not include fees and textbooks. Two years of school would cost you $15,560. The Jericho Plan saves you a total of $12,260 during your first two years of college. A fantastic savings.

May I drop out of the Jericho Plan, and stay in school?

Yes, you can. But you will have to pay back the total amount of the scholarship money and the service fee that has been paid on your behalf, and you will have to start making regular school payments.

If I get homesick, may I quit school in the middle of the semester?

Yes, you can. But you will have to pay the total semester charge for room, board, tuition, and all fees including the service fee.

If I cannot continue in school because of health circumstances beyond my control, what will happen?

Normally you would have to pay the total semester charge for room, board, tuition, and all fees including the service fee. However, a student may request a leave of absence before quitting. Under certain circumstances he will be readmitted to the Jericho Plan. The student must request a leave of absence in writing before he leaves school. He will know before leaving if a leave of absence from the Jericho Plan will be granted.

What happens if I get expelled from school?

It is unlikely that this will happen, but if it does you may be able to get back into school and be readmitted into the Jericho Plan. Each case will be handled on an individual basis, and will be considered upon re-application to school.

If I attend Hyles-Anderson College, do I have to join the Jericho Plan?

No. You may enter Hyles-Anderson on the traditional plan and make regular tuition payments, pay your class fees, buy your books, and pay other necessary fees. (See catalog for details)

How many credits may I take each semester?

The first semester, every freshman must take 16 credits. The second and subsequent semesters, students may take up to 18 credits.

May I attend summer school to work ahead and graduate early?

Yes, you can. However, summer school is not part of the Jericho Plan, and summer school tuition must be paid by the student.

What happens if I do not graduate in four years?

As long as you are taking at least 12 credits each semester as a junior and senior you may apply for an extra semester to graduate. This arrangement will allow you to graduate a semester later. Upon graduation, the scholarship portion of the Jericho Plan will be considered satisfied, and it will not have to be paid.

What happens if I fail courses?

It will be a rare thing for a student to fail a course. However, it may happen, and like any scholarship program, you must maintain certain academic standards. Hyles-Anderson College requires that you maintain a C average to remain in good academic standing. If you do not maintain that grade point average (1.0) you will be placed on academic probation and your free time may be restricted for mandatory study, and you will receive mandatory academic counseling. It is not our goal to punish anyone for low grades; rather, it is our desire to help everyone achieve success.

Which programs are eligible for the Jericho plan?

Will I have to be a part of work scholarship?

What is the difference between work, and “Character Training Duty?”

Would you give me an example of a student planned activity?

If the students on a dorm floor want to visit the local Cabella’s® Outdoor Store, they will plan the activity, and arrange for a bus or van and schedule a driver. Students may want to visit one of our many forest preserves or national parks, world class museums, aquarium, or planetarium. They will plan the trip, sack lunches, and arrange for transportation through the Activities Office. Students are advised on local activities of interest and guided in the planning and proper execution of a planned activity.

How do I pay for transportation to activities?

Transportation for most approved activities is paid by your registration fee. If there is an entrance fee for the student planned activity it will have to be paid by the students planning the activity.

What is the lecture series?

Most weeks on Tuesday evenings there will be a guest speaker who will meet in an informal setting in the dining hall, and discuss a particular topic with students. The usual format will be “question and answer”. It may be a guest preacher, one of the assistant pastors of First Baptist Church, and, on occasion, Brother Schaap. Visiting missionaries, and other people of note and experience will be guests as well.

May I date?

Hyles-Anderson College does not encourage freshman dating. However, we do encourage dating at four major events during the freshman year–the fall and spring ministry banquets, Christmas Lights, and Valentine banquets.

Are there any other dating activities?

No. However, there are many opportunities to socialize.

What is the difference between socializing and dating?

There will be many activities, events, and circumstances when men and ladies will be involved together that will allow them to get to know each other without the pressures of dating. Young people in the Jericho Plan will have more opportunity to meet, and get to know other students in a very meaningful, non-intimidating fashion.

What if I want to get married while a part of the Jericho Plan?

Students are strongly encouraged to wait until graduation to get married. Students may not marry and remain eligible for the Jericho Plan scholarship. They may remain in school providing all other rules concerning marriage are followed, but tuition, room and board, and all fees become due, and payable.

Is the athletic program mandatory?

Yes. Each student must choose one athletic program in which to participate on a weekly basis. There are a variety of programs available for all levels of physical conditioning, interest, and coordination. Choose one that is right for you.

You may choose to join one of the fitness clubs. You will be taught low impact exercise routines, proper diet, and weight control . The goal of the Jericho Plan is your success in the ministry. Healthy eating is a part of that success.

Do I have to go to all dining hall meals?

Yes. Meal times are more than a time to eat. They are a time of fellowship, student interaction, learning, and fun.

Are my parents permitted to visit me?

Yes, and we encourage them to do so. If you will let us know in advance, we will do everything we can to roll out the red carpet for them. They are more than welcome to sit with you at lunch, and you may set up a special lunch table with your parents and your friends.

May I have a special birthday party at lunch?

Yes. Let the dining hall know in advance, and we can make arrangements to help host the party.

May I choose whom I have for a roommate?

Generally you may request to have a particular person in your room with you. However, with five hundred freshmen students, it is impossible to let every student choose who is in their room. We try to meet every request, but it is not possible to guarantee every request will be satisfied. Part of the excitement and fun of going to college is meeting new people from around the country and the world. Don’t worry. Everyone is in the same boat, and they are just as apprehensive about meeting people as you are.

Will we be allowed to go to the local public libraries?

Yes, there will be bus transportation to the local library. You will need to get a library card.

Where do the shopping buses go?
